Roger Woodward’s historically acclaimed performance of the Dmitri Shostakovich cycle of 24 Preludes and Fugues op.87
Celestial Harmonies 14302-2, double CD - follow this link
http://www.harmonies.com/releases/14302.htm
This remarkable recording stands alone as a landmark similar to the complete cycle of Shostakovich’s string quartets by the Fitzwilliam Quartet on Decca. As the first recording of the 24 Preludes and Fugues op.87 in the West, it first appeared on a two LP set from RCA.

“A warm welcome back…” is a reviewer’s platitude all too often applied and one I am sure I have been guilty of using. But in this instance it really is a pleasure to rediscover in all its grandeur one of the peaks of the 20th Century piano repertoire in a performance of such power and insight. Nick Barnard

My Pick of the CDs: Veteran Australian pianist Roger Woodward is under-appreciated in the UK, so this is a welcome reissue of an historic 1975 recording of a Shostakovich masterpiece. Alexander Melnikov released an excellent new version on Harmonia Mundi, but this one is even better. Woodward’s sleeve notes are beautifully written

Roger Woodward discovers a different Shostakovich ........ How could nobody have noticed this undiscovered wealth and variety in Shostakovich’s music until now? Perhaps the world needs more musicians like Roger Woodward, unconventional and set on finding their own way

Profound
The Australian pianist Roger Woodward has been playing the music of Johann Sebastian Bach his whole life. But only recently has the public been able to listen to his live performances or CD recordings. One of the first fruits of Woodward’s encounters with Bach is a recording containing amongst others works, the Chromatic Fantasie and two Partitas from the first part of the Clavier-Übung, which received the 2007 special prize, awarded by the critics of the German recording industry. But this recording becomes …

This review is from: Johann Sebastian Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier, Books I & II, BWV 846-893 (5 CDs & 2 Pocket Scores, Complete Edition)
(Audio CD) …..I was initially sceptical that a recording using the full sonority of a Hamburg D Steinway would produce an excessively Romanticised WTC but I find it a welcome antidote to other rather dry performances where there has been an attempt to produce a harpsichord effect….

Dominy Clements.. I find myself in difficulties when writing about recordings which are so very good, it is hard to find a balance which describes a believeable truth as I hear it, without making a text which just ends up turning into sycophantic hyperbole. Looking on the Celestial Harmonies website, at least I am supported by the artist himself, who “considers [this] possibly the best recording of his career”. Even on only a first…….
